  • bachelors : first degree usually obtained after three years or more of full-time study.
  • undergraduate : a student who has not yet taken a first degree.
  • joint honours : type of degree where a student studies two subjects in equal depth.
  • ba : bachelor of arts.
  • access course : one or two year full or part-time course for students who are not ready to enter degree programmes.
  • campus : university or college grounds.
  • prospectus : brochure published by a university or college advertising their institution and courses and to encourage student recruitment.
  • first class : highest grade given for a degree. an overall mark of at least 70% is needed
  • freshers : introductory week for new university students to become familiar with their institution, its facilities, their course, their fellow students and the town or city they will be studying in.

  • semester : term lasting half an academic year.
  • lecture : educational talk given by a member of teaching staff to a (usually large) group of students.
