  • not guilty: you didn't do it- you go to trial
  • guilty: you did the crime- no trial, you are sentenced
  • no contest: you are not going to fight the charges. you won't say you did the crime, but you are not saying you didn't do it.
  • misdemeanor: medium charge- 6 months to 1 year in jail
  • gross misdemeanor: minor charge- 1 day to 6 months in jail
  • felony: most serious charge- 1 year to life in prison
  • evidence: items or things that are shown in court to prove a person is guilty or not guilty
  • plea bargain: a deal where you plead not guilty or no contest for a lower charge and/or less time. no trial- you are sentenced.
  • probation: the release of an offender from detention to supervised release at home
  • district attorney: the states lawyer who tried to get you convicted
  • public defender: your assigned lawyer who defends you in court
  • jury: consists of 12 people who cannot know you, listen to testimonies and decide verdict of guilty or not guilty
  • crime: an action or omission that constitutes an offense that may be prosecuted by the state and is punishable by law
