  • tone: the flavours or feelings of a piece of writing- it helps us identify the feelings or mood of the author
  • stakeholder: someone or something (an idea, concept or entity) that is affected by an issue and thus is depicted or characterised in a certain way within a piece of persuasive writing.
  • connotation: the meanings we associate with certain words, phrases or symbols.
  • metaphor: a type of language device where a symbol is used to express an idea figuratively rather than literally.
  • irony: a type of language device where the actual meaning of what is being expressed is the opposite of its literal meaning.
  • euphemism: a type of language device where something controversial, offensive or unpleasant is described indirectly in order to avoid causing controversy, offence or unpleasantness.
  • colloquialism: a broad term for language that is informal in nature, such as slang and certain sayings or idioms.
  • emotive language: language whose connotations evoke certain intended emotions within the reader.
  • imagery: language that is noticeably visual, often used to paint an especially graphic picture of something in the mind of the reader or audience member.
  • appeal: persuasive writers will make ‘appeals’ to a variety of human values such as our sense of justice, guilt, fairness, etc.
  • undertone: the underlying feeling or flavour of something.
