  • stay : a court-ordered short-term delay in judicial proceedings to give a losing defendant time to arrange for payment of the judgment or move out of the premises in an unlawful detainer case.
  • search warrant : a legal document authorizing a police officer or other official to enter and search premises.
  • sentence : the punishment assigned to a defendant found guilty by a court, or fixed by law for a particular offense.
  • standing : is the ability of a party to bring a lawsuit in court based upon their stake in the outcome.
  • self defense : the defense of one's person or interests, especially through the use of physical force, which is permitted in certain cases as an answer to a charge of violent crime.

  • summary judgement : a court order ruling that no factual issues remain to be tried and therefore a cause of action or all causes of action in a complaint can be decided upon certain facts without trial.
  • state : express something definitely or clearly in speech or writing. specify the facts of (a case) for consideration.
  • suppress : to keep evidence from being admitted at trial by showing either that it was illegally obtained or that it is irrelevant.
  • settlement : a formal arrangement made between the parties to a lawsuit in order to resolve it, especially out of court.
  • statute : a written law passed by a legislative body.
