• cuban missile crisis : the soviets put missiles near the us in order to threaten them. they only took them out after america took theirs out of italy and turkey.
• iron curtain : area surrounding the western border of the soviet union. made up of countries taken over by the ussr.
• cold war : time during which several countries, including the united states, great britain, and the soviet union were on the brink of nuclear warfare.
• imperialism : the term for what the soviet union was trying to build by expanding westward.
• east berlin : soviet governed capitol. people often tried to flee to the west as it was not run by the ussr.
• churchill : former prime minister of britain. condemned the soviet union's policies.
• red scare : the spread of communism through europe among other parts of the world. caused by the ussr attempting to create a communist empire.
• defcon 2 : the nearest the united states has ever gotten to full blown nuclear war. occurred in 1962.
• hungary : first country to open their borders to the west, and leading cause of the collapse of the iron curtain.
• collapse : the end of the iron curtain. started by the opening of western borders, and helped by the collapse of the berlin wall.
• truman : president of the united states during much of the cold war
• stalin : leader of the soviet union until 1953.
