  • epicenter : this is the point on earth’s surface that is directly above the focus.
  • focal depth : this is the distance between the focus and the epicenter.
  • compression : this shock wave travels out from the focus by compressing & expanding the ground it travels through.
  • primary : this is another term for a compression wave; it is also called a p-wave.
  • shear : this shock wave travels out from the focus more slowly than a compression wave & in a side-to-side motion.
  • secondary : this is another term for a shear wave; it is also called an s-wave.
  • surface : this shock wave travels out from the focus like ripples through calm water; it is responsible for the damage-causing ground shaking of an earthquake.
  • subsidence : this can create earth tremors when deep pockets of groundwater are removed.
