QUESTIONS LIST:

  • chromatid : one of two identical parts of a chromosome, held together by a centromere. formed during interphase by the replication of the dna strand
  • mitosis : the division of a nucleus into two so that the two daughter cells have exactly the same number and type of chromosomes as the parent cell.
  • cell cycle : the sequence of events that take places from one cell division until the next – it is made up of interphase, mitosis and cytokinesis
  • kinetochore : a protein structure found at the centromere of a chromatid tow which microtubes (spindle fibres) attach during nuclear division.
  • asexual reproduction : the production of new individuals of a species by a single parent organism
  • telomere : repetitive sequence of dna at the end of a chromosome that protects genes from the chromosomes shortening that happens at each cell division
  • stem cell : a relatively unspecialized cell that retains the ability to divide an unlimited number of times, and which has the potential to become a specialized cell (like a blood cell or muscle cell)
  • cancer : a group of diseases that result from a breakdown in the unusual control mechanisms that regulate cell division – leading to uncontrolled cell division and form tumors
  • mutation : a random change in the base sequence of dna, change in the structure or number of chromosomes.
  • carcinogen : a substance or environmental factor that can cause cancer.
  • prophase : phase where centrosomes start to move to opposing ends of the nucleus that is starting to breakdown
  • anaphase : phase where chromatids are pulled apart towards opposing poles.
  • telophase : phase where nucleolus reforms over chromatids to lead into cytokinesis
  • metaphase : phase where chromosomes line up to the middle (equator) of the spindle fibres formed.
  • s phase : period in interphase where dna replication occurs
  • g1 phase : period in interphase rna, enzymes and other important proteins needed for growth.
  • g2 phase : period in interphase to check dna and repair any errors before entering mitosis.
