  • short circuit : the condition in which an energized phase or ungrounded conductor comes into contact with another phase conductor, neutral, or ground.
  • circuit breaker : an ocpd designed to open and close through non-automatic means and open automatically at a predetermined overcurrent.
  • ground fault : an unintentional, electrically conductive connection between an ungrounded conductor of an electrical circuit and the normally non-current-carrying conductors, metallic enclosures, metallic raceways, metallic equipment, or earth.
  • ampacity : the amount of current a conductor can carry continuously.
  • fault current : the current delivered on at a point on the system during a short-circuit condition.
  • interrupting rating : the highest current at rated voltage that a device is identified to interrupt under standard test conditions.
  • overload : operation of equipment in excess of its normal, full load current rating that can cause damage after a sufficient length of time.
  • over current : any current in excess of the rated current of the equipment or ampacity of the conductor.
  • arching : a short circuit condition where fault current flows within an air gap between two pieces of metal.
